In suit over state teacher evals, Roswell school chief cites system's improvements

CEPR Faculty Director Thomas Kane recently shared testimony as an expert witness in a lawsuit concerning teacher evaluation systems in New Mexico.

The superintendent of the Roswell Independent School District testified Thursday that New Mexico’s controversial teacher evaluation system is an improvement over past practices because it gives him more information about his teachers.

The testimony came in the third day of hearings in Santa Fe on a lawsuit filed by teachers and Democratic lawmakers seeking to temporarily halt what they claim is an unfair teacher evaluation system instituted by Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration.

“I think it’s been a positive thing for our district,” said Tom Burris, Roswell’s superintendent since 2012.

But Burris also said he had renewed licenses for teachers who received low ratings, despite the state Public Education Department’s protocol. Burris said he has too few teachers and can’t afford to lose any.
