# June 2023: School's out for summer, but work lies ahead

June 29, 2023

This spring, the national pandemic declaration expired — but the effects of the pandemic are clearly still impacting children across all ages.

That was a key takeaway from the latest release of the [Education Recovery Scorecard](https://educationrecoveryscorecard.org/), a collaboration between CEPR researchers led by Thomas Kane and Stanford University’s Educational Opportunity Project. The 12 new state reports and [research brief](/file_url/2379) released in May provide the most comprehensive picture yet of how the pandemic affected student learning. Building on their previous work, the researchers' findings reveal how school closures and local conditions exacerbated inequality between communities — and how little time school leaders have to help students catch up.

Since the first state reports were released in October 2022, the Scorecard has been the sole source for comparing pandemic achievement losses in local communities across the country. It has been featured in more than 1,000 news stories across 47 states and 17 countries. These stories have been seen by more than 24 million people.

While the data is stark, we can still take action to help students catch up. As Tom has said, “As enticing as it might be to get back to normal, doing so will just leave the devastating increase in inequality caused by the pandemic in place. We must create learning opportunities for students outside of the normal school calendar, by adding academic content to summer camps and after-school programs and adding an optional 13th year of schooling.”
