# Winter 2024: Looking Back on a Year of Impact

December 20, 2024

 Dear CEPR community,

Since stepping into my role at CEPR this spring after years as a practitioner in systems leadership, I have been deeply inspired by the impactful work our researchers and staff are leading—from advancing math and reading instruction to fostering postsecondary persistence. I am even more committed to the role that research plays at the intersection of research and practice.

As we continue to grapple with the profound and lingering effects of disrupted learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we must continue to forge ahead leveraging research, innovation and evidence to ensure that children have access to a quality education. As my colleague [Tom Kane aptly reminds us,](https://lnkd.in/eiWn7RBD) “K-12 education is not a hopeless quagmire—at least, it hasn’t always been.”

I would argue that now, more than any other time in modern history, we must work together to ensure that we don't lose generations of learners to unprecedented global events. To return to the growth trajectory we experienced between 1990 and 2015, education systems must embrace learning themselves. There are no silver bullets and no quick wins. The key lies in identifying what works and scaling those strategies effectively. At CEPR, we are committed to illuminating both the challenges and the solutions alongside all of you.

In 2024, researchers and staff at CEPR have continued to shed light on the depth of the challenges facing our educational system, to work alongside partners and the wider community to tackle them using evidenced-based strategies, and to build capacity within education agencies for data-driven decision making that improves student outcomes. In this newsletter, we look back on some of the highlights of this year's work.

In 2025, CEPR's researchers will continue digging into the impact of high-dosage tutoring, trends in community college enrollment and engagement, intergenerational mobility, and the long-term impacts of charter schools. Our initiatives will continue to expand their scope, serving more school districts and states, and incorporating new and timely focus areas. This includes CEPR’s newest initiative, launching in 2025, which will answer critical questions about bringing the best education innovations to scale at the state level. We are excited to share more in the new year.

To our advisors, partners, fellows, and everyone who has joined us on this journey—thank you for your collaboration and support. Together, we can achieve transformational outcomes for students within our systems, from the classroom to the policy table.

Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a bright start to the new year.

Until 2025,
