Are Math Coaches the Answer to Lagging Achievement?

May 5, 2020

To address concerns about cost and effectiveness, Kraft and Harvard University education professor Heather C. Hill created and studied a virtual math-coaching program that could potentially be a cheaper way for districts to have dedicated math coaches. The program was based on a framework that was co-developed by researchers at Harvard and the American Institutes for Research. It centered on practices aligned to the Common Core State Standards, such as rich meaning-making and encouraging student questions.

AMTNYS Annual Conference: The Power of Evidence-based Coaching to Promote Equity in Mathematics Classrooms

2:00pm to 3:00pm

Location:

Rochester, NY

In this session, participants will experience how MQI Coaching, an evidence-based coaching model developed by researchers at Harvard, promotes equity by using classroom video and a detailed observation rubric to help teachers reflect on the type(s) of mathematical thinking being done by each student in their classrooms. The MQI Coaching routines support attainable and sustainable instructional growth, and help teachers raise theirexpectations for all students in mathematics, challenging common biases against certain populations.

Online Course: Improving Math Instruction Through Feedback

Mon Mar 5 (All day) to Sun Mar 18 (All day)

Location:

Online
An online professional development program for K-12 educators looking to improve instructional coaching for math teachers. Based upon the research of HGSE Professor Heather Hill, the workshop provides strategies for promoting high-quality math instruction and explores the role of school leaders, instructional coaches, and peer teachers in that process. The workshop begins with an introduction to Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI), an observation instrument and set of protocols that support teachers, coaches, and principals in analyzing instruction and planning for improvement. You will then practice observing classrooms and engaging in coaching conversations using MQI and other protocols. In the final portion of the workshop, you will explore strategies for using rubric-based coaching with instructional video capture in your own setting.

Hill, H. C., Kraft, M. A., & Herlihy, C. (2016). Developing Common Core Classrooms Through Rubric-Based Coaching . Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University.Abstract

The project team is still awaiting student test data to complete the evaluation, but this brief provides a short update on survey results. Students of MQI-coached teachers report that their teachers ask more substantive questions, and require more use of mathematical vocabulary as compared to students of control teachers. Students in MQI-coached classrooms also reported more student talk in class. Teachers who received MQI Coaching tended to find their professional development significantly more useful than control teachers, and were also more likely to report that their mathematics instruction improved over the course of the year.
