This report by West et al. (2018) analyzes data from the CORE Districts in California—one of the nation’s largest collaborations of school systems focused on improving student outcomes through innovative data use. The study examines the relationship between students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies—growth mindset, self-efficacy, self-management, and social awareness—and academic achievement in English language arts and mathematics. Drawing from survey data on more than 400,000 students across multiple districts, the researchers find that SEL measures are strongly correlated with student success and provide valuable insight beyond traditional test scores. The report emphasizes the potential of SEL data to inform instruction, equity initiatives, and accountability systems while also cautioning against overreliance on self-reported measures without complementary supports.
