Report Shows New Teachers Need More Support

The Strategic Data Project College-Going Diagnostic is featured in the following Delaware Newszap article.

DOVER — Thursday at the Biggs Museum, Lindsay Page from the Strategic Data Project released the preliminary results of the “Delaware Educator Diagnostic” study. 

The Strategic Data Project, based at Harvard University, worked with the state Department of Education for two years to analyze and research data about Delaware teachers.

The study confirmed what Teacher of the Year John Sell already knew: new teachers have a lot to learn. 

Before the presentation, Mr. Sell recounted his first year in the classroom — teaching public speaking to 17 and 18-year-olds. 

“I was treading water myself, just worried ‘How am I going to keep composed here in front of this group of kids?’” he said. 

“I think now to the way I was back then, and I compare myself to the new teachers I see come in every year, and I think, my goodness, if I had to tackle the many challenges that they have today, what would I be? Would I be one of the statistics? I don’t know.”
