This brief from the Leveraging Technology and Engaging Students project examines the implementation of an enhanced student coaching pilot for the Los Angeles College Promise (LACP), a first-year support program in the Los Angeles Community College District, which faces persistent challenges in student persistence and completion. To address high first-year attrition, LACCD launched a Spring 2025 randomized controlled trial providing selected students with weekly text messages, invitations to resilience- and time-management–focused workshops, and encouragement to meet with near-peer Success Coaches. Using messaging logs, workshop records, and detailed coaching interaction data, the study finds the intervention was implemented with fidelity: campuses sent frequent outreach, offered workshops in multiple formats, and text messages were the primary communication tool. Students most often sought coaching for LACP logistics, course registration, and academic concerns, and treatment-group students were more likely to meet with a coach, though overall workshop attendance and total exposure to enhanced supports were low. While implementation was largely successful, limited take-up may constrain potential impacts; a future analysis will assess effects on GPA, credit completion, persistence, and program completion.
