Student Agency in Learning (SAIL): Professional Learning Design Principles

This framework outlines key principles for professional learning that supports both teacher and student agency. Grounded in continuous improvement cycles, collaborative inquiry, and video observations, it emphasizes creating structures for reflection, feedback, and shared responsibility in improving practice. Teachers are encouraged to mirror the learning experiences they design for students—taking risks, setting goals, and using evidence to guide next steps—while also learning directly from students’ perspectives on how new practices impact their learning. Together, these principles foster a culture of ongoing growth and deeper student engagement.
